Welcome

I would like to welcome you to the web site for the Centre for Research in Complex Systems. The Centre for Research in Complex Systems at Charles Sturt University was formed in 1999 with researchers from the three main campuses of the university, Albury, Bathurst and Wagga Wagga. The group comprises of about 20 academic staff members with PhDs and a number of research students. In here you will find information about the people, our projects and our publications, but let me first outline our mission to you.

We live in an increasingly complex world. We build more and more intelligent machines; our social structures get ever richer both within our societies and the way societies interact with one another. We are said to live in the information age, where access and processing of information is the key to success. Yet the information available is growing at a wild pace. Recent estimates put the number of internet sites in 1999 at 50 million with hundreds of millions likely over the coming decade.

How do we cope with such vast amounts of information? We simply can no longer rely on human processing. We need more and more computer assistance, intelligent assistance. We need information agents which learn, adapt and negotiate with one another. Understanding how to build such agents is a problem not just concerned with the internet. It underlies the whole areas of adaptively and the nature of communication. It is these fundamental principles of intelligent, adaptive systems that is the focus of our research group.
