Save
the Platypoyds
The
computer game Save the Platypoids
was developed by first year computer game students from Charles
Sturt University, Professor Terry Bossomaier, Lecturer Jim Tulip from
the School of Information Technology with assistance from Professor
David Goldney from the Environmental Studies Unit. The game was made
possible by a grant from the Department of Industry, Science and Resources
under the Science and Technology Awareness Program. Save the Platypoids
is a game about conservation and biodiversity. During the game you
will have to protect your platypoids from the five major extinction
threats: habitat loss, competition for resources, introduced species,
disease, and pollution. However, that's not all. Platypoids have a
range of genetics, and you must also try to maintain the diversity
of the gene pool.
The aim of the game is to acquire enough territory
to preserve habitat, establish national parks in all platypoid breeding
areas, and then link your parks with reserve land in order to successfully
apply for world heritage listing. However, it's not entirely easy.
Along the way, you will have to prevent the evil Stealth Industries
from establishing inappropriate developments in platypoid breeding
areas, and deal constructively with those developments you can't oppose
or remove. You also have to make sure that your parks don't become
isolated by Stealth Industries' developments. You will also have to
battle disease outbreaks that threaten your platypoid populations.
As you play, you will be notified of new developments proposed by
Stealth Industries. It is up to you to decide whether to lobby against
them, ignore them, or seek to eliminate them by surrounding them with
reserve.
